On August 15, 2026, Dr. Rungrueng Kitphati, Secretary General of the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), assigned Mr. Panupong Pingish, Director of the Nuclear and Radiation Licensing Division, together with OAP executives and officials, to attend the opening ceremony of the National Science and Technology Fair 2026 at the Main Stage, Buildings 9–11, IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Center, Muang Thong Thani, Nonthaburi Province. The ceremony was presided over by Professor Dr. Yodchanan Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, with Professor Dr. Supachai Pathumnakul, Permanent Secretary of MHESI, MHESI executives, and representatives from relevant agencies in attendance. Dr. Rungrueng Kitphati said, “This year, OAP is showcasing a wide range of knowledge and technologies in nuclear science and radiation and inviting visitors to discover Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The exhibition provides an engaging learning space for children, young people, and the public to learn about SMRs, or Small Modular Reactors, one of the energy technologies attracting growing global interest. Visitors are invited to explore what SMRs are, how they work, what safety systems they use, and why this technology is being considered as one of the energy options of the future. Through interactive exhibitions and fun, easy-to-understand activities, along with a variety of prizes, OAP invites everyone to join us from 15–23 August at IMPACT Muang Thong Thani.”

The Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), extends its congratulations to Dr. Piyawan Srikongpan, Senior Professional-Level Radiation Physicist, on receiving an award for her academic presentation at the 2026 International Nuclear Science and Technology Conference (INST2026), held under the theme “Nuclear Science to Support Green Technology for Sustainable Living.” The conference provided an international platform for exchanging knowledge and research findings in nuclear science and technology. Her award-winning presentation, entitled “Using Electronic Licensing Data to Strengthen Regulatory Control of Radioactive Source Import and Export: A Risk-Informed Approach to Radiation Safety and Security — Thailand Case Study, 2019–2026,” demonstrates the use of electronic licensing data to support the analysis and regulatory control of radioactive source imports and exports in Thailand. The approach enhances the effectiveness of regulatory oversight in radiation safety and security by integrating licensing information with transaction data processed through the National Single Window (NSW) customs system.

On August 10, 2026, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) continued to advance Thailand’s national innovation strategy with the goal of positioning the country on the global clean energy map. Professor Dr. Yodchanan Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, has introduced a proactive policy agenda centered on Frontier Innovation and Green Energy Innovation Thailand to prepare Thailand for the future application of advanced energy technologies, including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), while establishing a nuclear safety regulatory framework aligned with international standards to ensure public confidence and safety. To translate Professor Dr. Yodchanan Wongsawat’s policy into concrete action, Dr. Rungrueng Kitphati, Secretary General of the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), together with OAP executives, traveled to Beijing, China, where they held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Hou Yingdong, Deputy Director General and Director of the Nuclear Energy Safety Regulation Bureau of the National Nuclear Safety Administration (NNSA), China’s national authority responsible for nuclear and radiation safety regulation.

The 66th Session of the CTBTO Preparatory Commission, held in Vienna, Republic of Austria, from 15–17 June 2026, a significant milestone for the global nuclear community, Thailand’s engagement represented more than an active contribution as a committed member of the international community dedicated to maintaining peace and security. It also provided an important opportunity to honor and commemorate the far-sighted vision of the Thai Monarchy, which has laid the foundations for the country’s peaceful nuclear development and national efforts in support of international peace over several decades. At the same time, Thailand is moving forward into a new era of clean energy through Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology, alongside close cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), is advancing the development of laws and regulatory approaches governing the siting of nuclear facilities to support the future deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Ms. Ampika Apichaibukol, Deputy Secretary General of OAP, presided over the opening of the workshop entitled “Review of Regulations on the Siting of Nuclear Facilities: Session 2 – Requirements for External Hazards Caused by Human Activities and the Delineation of Site and Related Zones,” held during 6–7 August 2026 at Rama Gardens Hotel, Bangkok. Approximately 47 participants from OAP and relevant agencies attended the workshop to exchange information, experiences, and views on developing appropriate approaches for the licensing of SMR sites in accordance with international standards.

Her award-winning research, entitled “Dose Distribution of the Co-60 Irradiation Model GR420 Using Red Perspex Dosimeter Compared with Monte Carlo Simulation,” was presented at the conference organized by the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (Public Organization) (TINT), which was held on 13–14 July 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Dr. Rungrueng Kitphati, Secretary General of the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), in his capacity as Adviser to the Subcommittee on the Study of Laws and Regulations for New Alternative Energy, attended the 7th Meeting of the Subcommittee held on 4 August 2026 at Committee Meeting Room CA 428, 4th Floor, the Parliament Building. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Pornperm Thongsri. The meeting focused on examining policy and regulatory approaches to support the development and deployment of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology in Thailand. Representatives from the Eastern Economic Corridor Office of Thailand (EECO), the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT), and the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) participated in discussions and exchanged views on nuclear- and radiation-related issues to support the formulation of policies, legislation, and regulatory measures for the safe, systematic, and future implementation of SMR technology in Thailand.

On this occasion, he delivered welcoming remarks to international experts and participants from relevant organizations, who convened to exchange technical knowledge and strengthen Thailand’s preparedness for the establishment of the National Neutron Dosimetry Standards Laboratory. The initiative aims to establish a key component of the country’s radiation metrology infrastructure, supporting the growing application of nuclear and radiation technologies while laying the foundation for the future development of Thailand’s nuclear technology capabilities.

On August 3, 2026, the Ministry of Energy, in collaboration with the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) ; the Department of Nuclear Engineering, Chulalongkorn University ; the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (Public Organization) (TINT) ; and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), organized the third public awareness and capacity-building workshop on the development of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) power plant projects for Provincial Energy Offices nationwide. Held during 3–4 August 2026 at Centara Udon Hotel, Udon Thani Province, the workshop aimed to strengthen the capacity of provincial energy officials to effectively communicate accurate and reliable information on SMR technology to local communities. The initiative forms part of a nationwide program comprising four regional workshops designed to cover all regions of Thailand.
