On April 22, 2026, Dr. Rungrueng Kitphati, Director-General of the Department of Science Service and Acting Secretary-General of the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), alongside executive members and relevant officials, welcomed the Senate Standing Committee on Energy. Led by Mr. Pornperm Thongsri, Chairman of the Committee, the delegation visited to discuss and exchange views on policies, operations, and guidelines for preparing the legal framework, standards, and safety regulations for Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology. The meeting took place in the Main Conference Room, 2nd Floor, Building 1, Office of Atoms for Peace.

OAP Strengthens Organizational Capability Through Strategic Project Management & AI Initiative

The Office of Atoms for Peace hosted the 4th strategic workshop on “Strategic Project Management & AI” on April 29–30, 2026, in Bangkok. The program focused on strengthening organizational capacity by integrating artificial intelligence and professional project management to improve efficiency, accuracy, and readiness for Thailand’s operational plan (2028–2032).

The workshop outlined nine key nuclear-related initiatives to advance the country:

Developing legal frameworks and systems to support Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology as a future clean energy source
Enhancing oversight of advanced medical radiation to position Thailand as an international medical hub
Promoting Thailand’s role as a global leader in nuclear and radiation fields
Driving digital transformation through AI integration
Strengthening preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological emergencies
Upgrading nuclear and radiation reference laboratories to meet top international standards
Ensuring strict safety regulations to protect the public, workers, and the environment
Increasing public awareness and understanding of nuclear technology
Promoting transparency and good governance within the organization

This initiative reflects a shift toward a modern “nuclear + AI” approach, supporting Thailand’s development in clean energy, advanced healthcare, and global technological leadership.

Office of Atoms for Peace Holds Emergency Preparedness Drill in Rayong

The Office of Atoms for Peace conducted a two-day training and emergency preparedness exercise in Rayong province (29–30 April 2026) to strengthen readiness for nuclear and radiological emergencies and reduce risks to the public and the environment.

On the first day, participants attended a workshop on the Incident Command System (ICS) alongside a table-top exercise simulating hazardous materials incidents during transportation. The session emphasized situation analysis, role-playing, and decision-making in crisis scenarios, followed by a review to improve response plans and prepare for a full-scale drill.

On the second day, the training covered key aspects of emergency response, including accidents involving radiation equipment, reporting procedures for suspected radioactive materials, simulated transport incidents involving radioactive substances, zone control, radiation monitoring and assessment, evacuation and victim assistance, as well as communication and reporting within the ICS framework. Participants included personnel from medical, public health, disaster prevention, and radiation safety sectors.

The results of this exercise will be used to enhance provincial emergency response plans and support an upcoming full-scale drill, aiming to ensure an effective, timely, and well-coordinated response to potential nuclear or radiological incidents.

Thailand’s Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP) held its second 2026 workshop on nuclear safeguards on April 24 in Songkhla, aiming to strengthen knowledge and standards in nuclear and radiation oversight. Led by Acting Secretary-General Rungreung Kitphati, the initiative emphasizes aligning Thailand’s regulatory practices with international standards and reinforcing global confidence in the country’s peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The workshop brought together representatives from several southern universities to enhance understanding of key topics such as relevant laws and regulations, nuclear material accounting, and reporting requirements for nuclear fuel cycle research not involving nuclear materials. It also served as a platform for collaboration and exchange of perspectives between regulators and academic institutions.

OAP expects that ongoing regional training efforts will expand cooperation networks, build national expertise, and strengthen Thailand’s nuclear safeguards system for long-term, sustainable development.

OAP Hosts Regional RAIS+ Training to Strengthen Nuclear and Radiation Regulatory Capacity in Asia-Pacific

The Secretary General of the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, emphasized the importance of developing information systems to enhance the efficiency of nuclear and radiation safety regulation. The Regulatory Authority Information System (RAIS+) was highlighted as a key tool for data management, monitoring, and analysis related to licensing and regulatory oversight, supporting the expansion of the digital licensing system (E-license).

To advance this initiative, OAP hosted the Regional Training Course on the Regulatory Authority Information System (RAIS+) for the Asia and Pacific Region from 2–6 March 2026 in Bangkok. The training brought together representatives from regulatory authorities in 14 member countries across Asia and the Pacific.
Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) served as instructors, providing lectures and hands-on training on the structure and use of the RAIS+ software. The course aimed to enable participants to effectively implement the system in their respective countries, strengthening data security, enhancing transparency, and supporting regulatory practices in line with international standards.
The training demonstrates OAP’s proactive role in promoting international cooperation and strengthening regulatory capacity in nuclear and radiation safety across the region. It also supports OAP’s four key policy priorities: readiness for emerging nuclear technologies, including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs); strengthening radiation metrology to ensure accuracy and traceability to international standards; improving radiation safety in medical applications with a focus on patient protection; and enhancing emergency preparedness and environmental protection to safeguard the public and future generations.

Ramkhamhaeng University Radiological Technology Students Visit Office of Atoms for Peace for Educational Study Tour

On February 24, 2026, 54 faculty members and students from the Radiological Technology Program, Faculty of Science at Ramkhamhaeng University visited the Office of Atoms for Peace for an educational study tour to gain practical experience beyond the classroom.
During the visit, they toured the Ionizing Radiation Metrology Laboratory and the Environmental Radiation Measurement Laboratory—key national infrastructure for maintaining radiation measurement standards and systematically monitoring environmental radiation impacts in line with international standards.
The study tour provided students with hands-on exposure to radiation measurement instruments, real-world professional applications, and essential skills in radiological technology. This experience supports the development of future health science professionals and promotes the safe and beneficial use of radiation for society.

Thailand Hosts Preparatory Workshop for Upcoming IAEA’s IPPAS

The Office of Atoms for Peace, under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held a preparatory workshop on 19–20 February 2026 in Bangkok ahead of Thailand’s upcoming International Physical Protection Advisory Service (IPPAS) Mission. The meeting aimed to strengthen national readiness for evaluating nuclear security capabilities, particularly the physical protection of nuclear facilities and radioactive materials under state regulation.

Participants included representatives from relevant national nuclear organizations and technical centers, totaling about 30 attendees. The workshop focused on defining the scope of the assessment, planning site visits to involved institutions, and preparing comprehensive supporting documentation. This preparatory effort represents an important step toward ensuring that Thailand’s IPPAS Mission, scheduled for late 2026, proceeds in a systematic and transparent manner, demonstrating the country’s commitment to continuously improving nuclear security standards in line with international frameworks.

Regional Training Course Strengthens Safety and Security Oversight for Medical Radiation in Asia

A regional training course was officially opened to strengthen regulatory foundations for the safe use of radiation and nuclear technology in medicine, with the goal of ensuring the highest level of protection for patients, workers, the public, and the environment, while enhancing regional capacity in safety and security oversight.

Organized by Thailand’s nuclear regulatory authority in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the “Regional Training Course on the Authorization and Inspection of Radiation Safety and Nuclear Security for Medical Practices” is being held from 16–27 February 2026 at the regulator’s headquarters. The program aims to ensure that the use of radioactive materials and radiation-generating equipment in medicine complies with international standards, while also strengthening regional cooperation across Asia and supporting Thailand’s role as a regional medical hub with strong radiation metrology infrastructure.
A total of 24 participants are attending, including IAEA experts, representatives from Asian member states, government officials, and specialists from national medical science agencies.
The training focuses on building essential knowledge and skills in licensing, inspection, and regulatory enforcement for medical radiation use. Participants study how to apply IAEA safety standards and nuclear security guidance in real-world operations, review regulatory processes systematically, and engage in lectures, practical exercises, case studies, and country-level experience sharing. The program also includes technical visits to radiotherapy facilities in Thailand, enabling participants to observe licensing and inspection practices in operational settings and analyze real-world medical radiation applications.
