Thailand Strengthens Regional Leadership in Radiation Metrology

Thailand’s Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, continues to strengthen regional collaboration and capacity in radiation metrology. Thailand is positioning itself as a regional hub for radiation protection calibration, particularly in calibrating radiation measuring instruments to enhance safety for personnel and the public.

Ms. Ampika Apichaibukol, Deputy Secretary-General of OAP, opened a workshop titled “The comparison of Air Kerma for photon and absorbed dose to tissue for beta in radiation protection calibration”. The workshop focused on comparing radiation dose measurements for gamma/X-rays (Air Kerma) and beta radiation (absorbed dose to tissue), in alignment with IAEA standards.

The event gathered 42 participants from 15 laboratories across 10 countries in Asia and featured expert contributions from IAEA and specialists from South Korea and Japan. It emphasized improving measurement accuracy, reliability, and laboratory calibration systems to meet international standards.

OAP’s efforts reinforce Thailand’s role as a leader in radiation safety and standardization in Asia, with long-term goals of supporting sustainable, safe, and valuable uses of nuclear energy.
