In an era where nuclear security continues to draw global attention, strengthening nuclear forensic capabilities is a key mechanism to support investigations and prevent the illicit use of nuclear and radioactive materials. This is especially important in the ASEAN region, which plays a strategic role and faces a variety of potential risks.
To address these challenges, a practical training course titled “ASEAN Training Course on Capacity Building in Nuclear Forensic” was held from 21 to 25 July 2025 at the Office of Atoms for Peace in Thailand, with participation from experts of the Malaysian Nuclear Agency.
The training aimed to develop personnel skills in managing radiological crime scenes, collecting and analyzing radioactive evidence using advanced scientific techniques such as Gamma Spectrometry, Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). It also emphasized data analysis and linking findings with nuclear forensic databases to support accurate and effective law enforcement and investigations.
The event served as a platform for experience sharing and capacity building, contributing to the enhancement of nuclear forensic capabilities within the region. It also fostered regional cooperation and improved preparedness for future nuclear and radiological security incidents in a sustainable manner.
