On 11 August 2025, Thailand, represented by the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), actively participated in the 12th ASEANTOM meeting in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.” Thailand promoted the safe development of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology, suitable for ASEAN countries, and proposed hosting an IAEA Nuclear Security Cooperation Centre to train regional experts.
Thailand also led the creation of ASEAN guidelines for public communication during nuclear or radiological emergencies, successfully tested in joint exercises with IAEA and member states.
Collaboration with international bodies such as IAEA, the European Commission, WINS, and the Asian Nuclear Safety Network was strengthened to raise nuclear safety standards, improve radioactive waste management, and build public trust.
OAP reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to sustainable and strategic nuclear safety governance to ensure regional stability and protect public health and the environment.
