Enhancing Radiation Safety: Thailand Trains Personnel in Metal Recycling Oversight

Dr. Rungruang Kitphati, Director-General of the Department of Science Service and Acting Secretary-General of the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), announced that the OAP organized a workshop titled “Control of Scrap Recycling and Waste Management” from 17–21 November 2025 in Chonburi. The training aimed to strengthen the capability of personnel in controlling and managing radioactive materials that may contaminate the metal recycling and metal production industries. These activities can pose risks of contamination from naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) or orphan radioactive sources if not properly monitored, potentially affecting worker and public health, the environment, and the economy.

The workshop focused on enhancing understanding of the types of radioactive materials found in the metal industry, improving skills in detection, screening, and control of radioactive contamination, and preparing personnel to respond safely to radiation emergencies. It also promoted cooperation among key regulatory bodies, including OAP, the Department of Primary Industries and Mines, and the Department of Industrial Works, in line with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) standards.

Experts from the IAEA, OAP, DPIM, DIW, and the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology provided in-depth lectures. Participants also visited Oryx Stainless (Thailand) Co., Ltd. to observe real-world applications of radiation safety practices.

OAP expects the training to strengthen Thailand’s nuclear and radiation safety oversight in accordance with international standards, supporting existing cooperation agreements on radiation safety in industrial plants and mining operations. The goal is to ensure sustainable and effective radiation safety in metal production and recycling nationwide.
