Advancing Minister Supamas’ Policy to Position Thailand Among the ‘Top 5’ Global Leaders in Nuclear Technology Safety and Security for Peaceful Development

Under the policy of promoting the peaceful use of nuclear technology for economic, social, energy, medical, and agricultural development, as well as preparing for the adoption of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to provide clean and affordable energy, the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP) reaffirmed its commitment to advancing nuclear technology for the benefit and safety of the country and its people.

On 24 April 2025, OAP welcomed senior executives from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) during their visit to Thailand. Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration and monitoring Thailand’s progress in key IAEA flagship projects. These include the “Rays of Hope” initiative, aimed at providing safer, more precise cancer treatment using nuclear technology, and a project addressing marine pollution and microplastics, which pose risks to health, safety, and tourism.

Additionally, Thailand proposed to the IAEA the recognition of the Centre of Radiation Processing for Polymer Modification and Nanotechnology (CRPN), under Kasetsart University, as an IAEA Collaborating Centre in agriculture. If approved, it would be the first such center in Southeast Asia, contributing to the development of sustainable green industries and environmental protection.

Another major topic was the advancement of clean energy initiatives. OAP is preparing to launch the “Embarking the First SMR in Southeast Asia” project, focusing on building regional cooperation with support and guidance from the IAEA. The goal is to ensure technical readiness and establish robust safety standards for the deployment of the region’s first Small Modular Reactor (SMR), promoting energy security, environmental sustainability, and public safety.
