A regional workshop titled “SMR School: Interregional Workshop on Key Aspects of SMR Development and Deployment” was held from 21–25 July 2025 in Thailand. Organized under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation’s policy to promote sustainable development through science and technology, the event was a collaboration between the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and key national energy agencies.
The aim was to enhance understanding of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), a clean and low-carbon energy technology, among stakeholders in policy, academia, and regulation. The workshop brought together 93 participants from 11 countries, including technical experts, regulators, and policymakers, and featured both presentations and hands-on training aligned with IAEA guidelines.
Key topics discussed during the five-day workshop included:
– National updates on SMR development
– Technical and safety principles of SMR design
– Legal and regulatory readiness
– Infrastructure development, human resources, and stakeholder engagement
– National energy planning and the role of SMRs in the carbon transition
A highlight of the event was a keynote speech by an IAEA executive, emphasizing the strategic role of SMRs in achieving net-zero carbon emissions and the importance of aligning national frameworks with international safety standards.
The workshop also featured special sessions at the Office of Atoms for Peace, where representatives from Thailand’s energy sector shared perspectives on SMR deployment in the national context.
OAP reiterated its commitment to strengthening nuclear and radiation safety oversight, enhancing legal and regulatory frameworks, and ensuring public and environmental protection while supporting advanced nuclear technology cooperation under international standards.
