Thailand Showcases Proactive Role at CTBTO Science and Technology 2025 Conference in Vienna

The Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation of Thailand, participated in the Science and Technology 2025 Conference (SnT 2025) held from 9–12 September 2025 in Vienna, Austria, organized by the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).

Ms. Pennapa Kanchana, OAP Deputy Secretary-General, was invited to deliver remarks at the opening session under the theme “Verification: Today Tomorrow Together”, highlighting Thailand’s proactive role in developing nuclear test monitoring and verification systems that enhance national security and elevate Thai monitoring stations to international standards.

Thailand, under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) framework, collaborates with the Hydrographic Department of the Royal Thai Navy to operate and maintain two International Monitoring System (IMS) stations:
RN65 radionuclide station
PS41 primary seismic station

Both continuously transmit high-quality data to CTBTO’s International Data Centre. Thailand also plans to install a noble gas detection system at RN65 next year to further strengthen global nuclear test detection capabilities.

The SnT 2025 conference gathered over 1,000 participants worldwide, including senior officials, scientists, experts, and students, to exchange knowledge on technologies supporting nuclear test monitoring and verification. Thailand contributed through a presentation by Ms. Piyawan Krisanangkur, OAP Senior Nuclear Chemist, on “Global Innovations Part II: Radionuclide Technologies”, alongside participation from the Thai Meteorological Department.

Thailand also actively promotes involvement in On-Site Inspection (OSI) activities, knowledge-sharing, and disaster risk reduction efforts.

Ms. Pennapa emphasized that Thailand’s participation reflects its active engagement in innovation, technology, and women’s empowerment on the international stage, while reaffirming its firm commitment to supporting a complete ban on nuclear testing.
