Dr. Rungreung Kitphati, Director-General of the Department of Science Service and Acting Secretary-General of the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), announced key outcomes from the “Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Technology,” held on October 10, 2025, in Bangkok. The event celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and China, and was co-organized by OAP, the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT), and China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).
The conference aimed to exchange knowledge, best practices, and perspectives on nuclear technology for peaceful uses, aligning with Thailand’s national policy on clean energy and low-carbon society, as presented by PM Anutin Charnvirakul in September 2025.
Dr. Rungreung emphasized Thailand’s commitment to preparing regulatory frameworks to support Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)—a clean and safe nuclear energy technology.
Key highlights:
Continued Thailand–China collaboration in science and technology, especially following the 2022 MoU between the Thai Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) and China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA).
Experts from both countries shared insights on nuclear energy, SMRs, nuclear safety regulations, isotope production for medicine, and public communication strategies.
Prominent speakers included:
Mr. Ma Minggeng (Chinese Embassy): Highlighted expanding bilateral cooperation in science and nuclear energy.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thawatchai Onchan (TINT): Noted SMR’s potential and nuclear tech applications in medicine, agriculture, and industry.
Dr. Fan Liuyan (CNNC): Expressed CNNC’s readiness to collaborate with Thailand on public understanding and practical application of nuclear technologies.
Over 70 experts from Thai and Chinese agencies and institutions attended, including representatives from EGAT, PTT, Chulalongkorn University, KMITL, Kasetsart University, CNNC, CNEC, NPIC, and others. The conference underscored nuclear energy as a path toward sustainable and secure energy development.
