Thailand Accelerates Nuclear “Quick Win” Projects with IAEA Support

Dr. Rungreung Kitphati, Director-General of the Department of Science Service and Acting Secretary-General of the Office of Atoms for Peace (Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation – MHESI), stated that the ministry is committed to using nuclear and radiation technology for peaceful purposes to enhance Thailand’s sustainable development, security, economy, and public well-being. This aligns with Minister Surasak Phanchareonworakul’s policy to accelerate key projects that deliver quick and tangible benefits (“Quick Wins”).

Dr. Rungreung and senior executives met with Ms. Anna Pia Papaccioli, Programme Management Officer of the IAEA, to advance more than 10 major Technical Cooperation (TC) projects. These projects involve nuclear technology applications in clean energy, modern medicine, food safety, environmental protection, and radioactive waste management.

He highlighted two major Quick Wins supported under the cooperation:

Quick Win 1 – Clean Nuclear Energy:
Thailand is receiving IAEA support to develop national safety infrastructure and regulatory frameworks for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). This aligns with the IAEA’s Atoms4NetZero initiative to help countries adopt nuclear energy for decarbonization.

Quick Win 2 – Becoming ASEAN’s First “Centre of Excellence in Nuclear Medicine”:
Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, has been recognized as an IAEA “Anchor Centre” under the Rays of Hope program—the first in Southeast Asia. This strengthens Thailand’s capabilities in diagnostic radiology, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, and medical physics, improving access to modern medical services and reducing healthcare inequality.

Other nuclear technology projects include improving food safety verification, assessing the impact of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems and human health, and enhancing operational safety of research reactors.

Dr. Rungreung concluded that the Thailand–IAEA partnership across more than 10 national projects not only supports MHESI’s policy goals but also lays long-term foundations for the country’s energy, food safety, environmental protection, and medical advancements—ultimately benefiting the Thai people.
