On 6 October 2026, Dr. Rungruang Kitpati, Secretary-General of the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), participated in a Green Talk forum entitled “SMRs and the Future of Thailand’s Energy: The Role of Small Modular Reactors in Energy Security and Achieving Net Zero.” The event was held at the headquarters of Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production, Ltd. in Bangkok. Dr. Rungruang shared perspectives on Thailand’s nuclear energy outlook amid the country’s key challenges of ensuring energy security while advancing towards its Net Zero targets. The discussion was moderated by Mr. Chuanin Phetket, Engineering Advisor at Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production, Ltd.
OAP’s participation in the forum underscored its role in advancing knowledge and promoting a sound understanding of the regulatory framework governing the use of nuclear energy and radiation, with safety as the cornerstone of all considerations involving nuclear technology. The discussion also highlighted the importance of taking a comprehensive approach to energy development, particularly regarding Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), which are gaining attention as a potential clean energy option for the future. Their development and deployment require careful consideration throughout the entire lifecycle, encompassing technology, safety, regulatory oversight, and radioactive waste management. This holistic approach is essential to ensuring that nuclear energy is used safely and responsibly while fostering public confidence in Thai society.
Ultimately, SMRs are not merely a matter of technological advancement; they concern the future of the Thai people. As Thailand considers nuclear energy as part of its pathway towards Net Zero, OAP remains committed to ensuring that the safety of the public, the environment, and future generations goes hand in hand with the country’s sustainable development.
