OAP and EGAT Discuss Thailand’s Preparedness for SMR Development

           The Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP) welcomed executives and representatives from the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) on 19 May 2026 to discuss Thailand’s preparedness for the development of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) power plants.
           The discussion focused on SMR technology as a future clean energy solution that can strengthen energy security, support renewable energy growth, and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in support of Thailand’s carbon neutrality and net-zero goals. Key outcomes of the meeting included: (1) the preparation of an MOU among relevant agencies, (2) collaboration on public communication and awareness regarding SMR power plants, (3) development in accordance with the 19 IAEA standards, and (4) EGAT’s support through donations for scholarships and welfare programs for OAP personnel.
           The meeting also emphasized the importance of promoting public understanding and participation through transparent, accurate, and accessible communication to build confidence in SMR technology and the peaceful use of nuclear energy while ensuring public and environmental safety in accordance with international standards.
