The Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), supported the Radiological and Nuclear Smuggling Detection (RNSD) training conducted by the Office of Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (NSDD), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), from 14–18 September 2026. The training took place at the Tactical Training Center of the Royal Thai Police in Cha-am District, Phetchaburi Province. Its objective was to enhance the knowledge, understanding, and practical skills of relevant personnel in detecting and preventing the illicit trafficking of nuclear and radioactive materials outside regulatory control, as well as strengthening preparedness for potential threats related to terrorism.
OAP played a key role in providing technical expertise, personnel, and nuclear and radiation equipment to support demonstrations and practical exercises. These included a neutron source, a gamma-ray source, radiation shielding materials, naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM), and samples of industrial equipment containing radioactive materials. These resources enabled participants to systematically practice identifying, detecting, and assessing simulated scenarios, highlighting OAP’s role in supporting national security while maintaining its commitment to nuclear and radiation safety regulation to protect the public and build confidence.
Preventing and detecting the illicit trafficking of nuclear and radioactive materials requires close cooperation among multiple agencies, including security authorities, law enforcement agencies, and nuclear and radiation organizations. As Thailand’s national regulatory authority for nuclear and radiation activities, OAP provides technical knowledge and expertise to help frontline officers and relevant agencies detect potential threats, assess situations, and coordinate appropriate responses. These efforts are essential to strengthening Thailand’s nuclear security framework and ensuring that nuclear and radiation technologies are used safely, securely, and exclusively for peaceful purposes.
