OAP Supports Thailand’s 14th National Development Plan, Advancing Nuclear Safety, High-Value Industries, and SMR Readiness

The Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP) is advancing the vision of the 14th National Economic and Social Development Plan, “Thailand’s Next Agenda,” by strengthening its role as a scientific infrastructure institution and a national nuclear and radiation safety regulatory authority. OAP aims to connect safe nuclear technology with clean energy, high-tech industries, and medical applications, build investor confidence, and accelerate preparations for Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology to support Thailand’s transition toward a low-carbon energy future.

On 30 September 2026, Dr. Rungreung Kitphati, Secretary-General of OAP, under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), attended the 2026 Annual Conference of the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), held under the theme “The 14th Plan: Thailand’s Next Agenda.” The conference was chaired by Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, who delivered the opening address and keynote speech. The event provided a platform to exchange views on the direction of the draft 14th National Economic and Social Development Plan (2028–2032).

Dr. Rungreung Kitphati stated that OAP is ready to serve as part of Thailand’s scientific infrastructure supporting national development, particularly by establishing an effective nuclear and radiation safety regulatory system that keeps pace with technological advancements and complies with international standards. This will help ensure that nuclear technologies are used safely and transparently while building confidence among the public, businesses, and investors.

The Secretary-General also highlighted the importance of preparing for Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology, which could play a role in Thailand’s energy transition. OAP is prioritizing preparations in legislation, regulations, standards, workforce development, and safety oversight to ensure that Thailand can accommodate SMR technology systematically and responsibly.

Throughout these efforts, OAP remains guided by the principle that safety must come first, with public confidence given equal importance alongside technological development.
