The Nuclear Energy for Peace Commission (NEPC) is moving forward to lay the foundations for Thailand’s readiness for future nuclear energy, particularly Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology. SMRs are among the emerging technologies with the potential to support energy security and Thailand’s transition toward a low-carbon energy future. At the same time, they present opportunities to advance technology, research and innovation, human capital development, and the country’s competitiveness. To prepare Thailand for this future, six key systems are being developed, covering a standards-based regulatory system; nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness and response; legislation and compensation mechanisms; radioactive waste management; workforce development; and research and development. These efforts aim to advance Thailand from being a “technology user” to becoming a “value creator” in the global industrial value chain, guided by the principles of Safety, Security, and Safeguards.
