A delegation from Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) led by Prof. Dr. Supachai Pathumnakul visited the People’s Republic of China from May 16–18, 2025, to study nuclear energy technologies, in alignment with the ministry’s key policy on exploring the potential of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). SMRs are emerging as a clean, low-carbon energy option due to their high safety standards, compact size, and minimal land use, offering long-term energy security and sustainability.
The study visit focused on gaining practical knowledge of nuclear power plant operations, including fuel loading preparation, reactor system testing, and stringent safety regulations—vital for adapting these technologies to Thailand’s context.
The mission also included meetings with senior executives from China’s leading nuclear organizations to discuss safe nuclear development, research collaboration, personnel training, and technology transfer. These efforts aim to support Thailand’s infrastructure development, policy planning, and regulatory framework for peaceful uses of nuclear technology, particularly SMRs, and to strengthen international cooperation in the nuclear field.
