OAP Backs Low-Carbon Nuclear Technology at National TNA Project Launch

On May 15, 2025, at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel in Bangkok, Dr. Roongreung Kitpati, Director-General of the Department of Science Service and Acting Secretary-General of the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), participated in the official launch of Thailand’s second Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) project. The event was presided over by Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), and organized in collaboration with the National Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Policy Council (NXPO).

The Minister emphasized the role of MHESI in promoting practical research and innovation in sectors such as energy, agriculture, industry, and waste management. The focus was on integrating education, research, and technology development to enhance national capacity in responding to climate change and natural disasters.

Dr. Surachai Satitkunarat, Director of NXPO and Thailand’s TNA project coordinator, highlighted that the TNA is a key tool for identifying specific technological needs for both climate change adaptation and mitigation, and for enhancing access to funding and international knowledge exchange.

Dr. Roongreung expressed his support for the TNA initiative and reaffirmed the role of OAP in regulating nuclear and radiation safety. He noted OAP’s commitment to supporting the development of low-carbon nuclear technologies—especially Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)—to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and align with Thailand’s sustainable development goals (SDGs).
