Dr. Joao Martins of Portugal, the IRRS Team Leader, Dr. Geraldine Pina of France, the IRRS Deputy Team Leader and Mr. Manuel Recio, IAEA Coordinator paid a courtesy call to the Prof. Dr. Supachai Pathumanakul, the MHESI Permanent Secretary on February 4, 2025. The visit accompanied by Ms. Pennapa Kanchana, OAP Deputy Secretary General, underlines the importance of the IRRS Mission which have been taking place in Thailand from February 2 to 14, 2025.
Thailand is conducting an Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) assessment to evaluate the country’s nuclear and radiation regulatory system. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) developed the IRRS as a review mechanism to assess regulatory frameworks and systems against IAEA Safety Standards. This process relies on peer review and aims to enhance nuclear and radiation regulatory oversight.
On this occasion, the Permanent Secretary expressed gratitude to IAEA experts for their support, which has strengthened Thailand’s nuclear and radiation regulatory capabilities. In particular, OAP acknowledged the assistance provided for the ongoing IRRS Mission assessment. IAEA experts are scheduled to observe inspections conducted by the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT) at the radioactive waste storage facility and research reactor, as well as inspections at Thainamthip Co., Ltd. and Bhumibol Hospital. Additionally, OAP reaffirmed its commitment and willingness to support other IAEA activities in Thailand.
