OAP Welcomed French Embassy Delegation to Discuss Nuclear Energy Development in Thailand

On February 26, 2025, Ms. Pennapa Kanchana, OAP Deputy Secretary-General, along with OAP executives, welcomed a delegation from the French Embassy, led by Mr. Arnaud Mathieu, to discuss the development of nuclear energy in Thailand and the application of new technologies to enhance the efficiency and safety of the energy industry.

The meeting aimed to explore the feasibility of introducing nuclear energy technologies in Thailand, particularly Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), which have garnered international interest. Discussions also covered infrastructure, regulatory frameworks, and strategies for stakeholder engagement to foster public and institutional understanding and acceptance. As Thailand’s nuclear safety regulatory authority, OAP has been actively preparing in terms of legal frameworks and personnel in anticipation of potential SMR deployment in the future.

A key discussion point was the agreement between OAP and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), which will play a crucial role in setting regulatory requirements and operational standards for future nuclear energy initiatives. This collaboration marks a significant step toward the potential development of a stable and sustainable nuclear energy program in Thailand.

The French delegation participating in the meeting included Mr. Arnaud Mathieu and Ms. Emma Rousseau from the French Embassy in Singapore, as well as Dr. Jean Sol Macher and Ms. Olivia Pezard from the French Embassy in Thailand. The delegation shared valuable insights and perspectives that will contribute to shaping Thailand’s future energy direction.
