Dr. Rungreung Kitpati, Director-General of the Department of Science Service and Acting Secretary-General of the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), revealed that OAP, under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), is advancing the policy of Minister Supamas Isarabhakdi, which emphasizes the peaceful development of nuclear energy technologies. This includes enhancing the efficiency and safety of regulatory processes concerning the use of nuclear energy and radiation for the benefit of the country, ensuring the highest safety standards for the public and the environment in line with international norms.
To this end, OAP has partnered with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to organize the International Workshop of the Regulatory Forum for Safety of Uranium Production and Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (REGSUN). The workshop is being held from 19 to 23 May 2025 at the OAP main conference hall, with over 65 participants from 34 countries, including both Thai and international attendees.
Dr. Rungreung further stated that this workshop serves as a critical platform for the exchange of academic knowledge, best practices, and regulatory experiences among IAEA member countries. It supports OAP’s ongoing efforts to elevate Thailand’s radiation safety standards to align with global practices. Additionally, it fosters international cooperation in the sustainable management of NORM and uranium-related activities.
Furthermore, the workshop plays an important role in driving the development of national and regional regulatory frameworks. These will form a foundational part of future strategic plans for managing radioactive materials and spent nuclear fuel, aiming to ensure sustainable and community-friendly safety practices.
