OAP Conducts Emergency Response Training to Enhance Nuclear Safety Preparedness

Dr. Rungreung Kitphati, Director-General of the Department of Science Service and Acting Secretary-General of the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), emphasized the importance of strengthening personnel preparedness for nuclear and radiological emergencies. This aligns with the policy of Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation, focusing on enhancing government workforce capabilities to address emerging threats—especially in nuclear and radiological safety, which underpins long-term national security and advanced technology adoption.

To this end, OAP organized a training and emergency response exercise from May 27–29, 2025, in Kanchanaburi Province, with over 60 staff participating. The training aims to improve their skills in emergency assessment and management.

Dr. Rungreung noted that although nuclear incidents are rare, they can cause significant harm to lives, the environment, and national credibility. Therefore, preparation in personnel, equipment, and knowledge is critical.

The training follows the 2021–2030 National Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Plan and aligns with the national disaster management and security frameworks. In addition to technical skills, the exercise also focuses on enhancing internal cooperation and communication to ensure accurate and efficient responses, reflecting the Ministry’s commitment to a safe, secure, and sustainable science and technology system to support Thailand’s rapid development.
