On June 18, 2025, Thailand’s Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, welcomed representatives from the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Embassy in Thailand to discuss cooperation on Small Modular Reactor (SMR) infrastructure development. The meeting, held at the OAP headquarters, was led by OAP Deputy Secretary-General Ms. Ampika Apichaibukol and attended by OAP executives.
The U.S. delegation was headed by Dr. Kirsten Cutler, Senior Advisor for Nuclear Energy Innovation, and Ms. Amalia Wijeweera from the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation, along with economic officials from the U.S. Embassy.
The discussion focused on exploring Thailand’s needs and readiness for the safe and responsible adoption of SMR technology in line with international standards. This collaboration highlights OAP’s role in promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy and strengthening Thailand’s regulatory and workforce capacity to support clean, sustainable energy solutions.
