Office of Atoms for Peace Joins IDOS 2026 in Vienna, Showcasing Thailand’s Radiation Metrology Capabilities to Elevate Measurement Standards to Global Benchmarks

From October 5 to 9, 2026, the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), attended the International Symposium on Standards, Applications and Quality Assurance in Medical Radiation Dosimetry (IDOS 2026) at the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Republic of Austria. The symposium was convened to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the IAEA/WHO Secondary Standards Dosimetry Laboratories Network (IAEA/WHO SSDL Network).
IDOS 2026 serves as a premier international platform for exchanging knowledge and expertise regarding standards, applications, and quality assurance in medical radiation dosimetry.
The event brought together leading metrology, radiation, and medical physics organizations and networks from across the world, including the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU), the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP), the European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS), and the European Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (EFOMP).
Dr. Rungrueng Kitphati, Secretary-General of OAP, prioritizes and actively supports the professional development of OAP personnel on international academic stages. He designated and supported Dr. Vithit Pungkun, Director of the National Institute of Nuclear and Radiation Reference Standards Laboratory , Dr. Chutima Termsuk, Senior Radiation Physicist, and Ms. Leeda Mitrayan, Operational Radiation Physicist, to attend the symposium, present research findings, and exchange insights on Thailand’s radiation metrology capabilities.
3 Key Highlights of OAP at IDOS 2026
• Dr. Vithit Pungkun was appointed as a member of the Scientific Committee and served as a Rapporteur. He also shared OAP’s experiences in a presentation titled “The Joys of the Journey: Being a Member of the IAEA/WHO SSDL Network,” illustrating the role and experiences of network membership in fostering global radiation measurement standards and laboratory capabilities.
• Dr. Chutima Termsuk delivered an oral presentation titled “Strengthening Standard Dosimetry Capabilities in Southeast Asia Through Regional Intercomparison.” The presentation detailed the results of a regional intercomparison project among standard dosimetry laboratories in Southeast Asia aimed at strengthening measurement capabilities, metrological traceability, and quality assurance across 12 participating laboratories involving 54 measurement items. She also presented a poster titled “Dose Reconstruction of an Ir-192 Industrial Radiography Incident Using OSL Dosimeter and Monte Carlo Simulation,” which focused on assessing and reconstructing worker radiation doses following an industrial radiography incident by combining Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dosimeters with Monte Carlo simulations.
• Ms. Leeda Mitrayan delivered an oral presentation titled “Validation of the Cs-137 Air Kerma Primary Standard Following Laboratory Relocation at OAP, Thailand.” Her talk reported on the verification and validation of the primary standard for Cs-137 gamma air kerma after relocating the OAP laboratory facilities. The evaluation confirmed that key correction factors agreed with baseline values within 0.3%, verifying the stability and integrity of OAP’s primary standard.
OAP’s participation in IDOS 2026 provided an opportunity to showcase Thailand’s radiation metrology capabilities on the international stage while enabling OAP staff to exchange knowledge, best practices, and measurement standards with world-leading experts and institutions.
This engagement directly contributes to advancing the accuracy, reliability, and international traceability of Thailand’s national radiation measurement laboratories.
Furthermore, these contributions reinforce OAP’s core mission as Thailand’s principal nuclear and radiation regulatory authority and support ongoing collaboration under the IAEA/WHO SSDL Network to ensure Thailand’s nuclear and radiation standards achieve international recognition.
